Behind the Scenes DINT 117 - Committed much?

Here's how DINT 117 took shape as we sifted through the news to find the truth about tech, race, and gender this week.

Big Tech firms have squeezed all the significance out of the word ‘commit’ and its variations commitment, committed, commiting and the like.

That’s because each of them have used that word in comments responding to their shifts away from diversity efforts they pledged in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

Microsoft is at the center of this discussion now because Business Insider reports they’ve killed their entire diversity, equity, and inclusion program. That’s not necessarily so and I talk about why I believe that in today’s podcast.

I’ve also included facts about Microsoft’s diversity efforts based on their last diversity and inclusion report.

I’m no Microsoft apologist but I do know the Business Insider story has an unnamed source with very few details to support the story.

In this episode I also share how Brazil may provide hope for us in the United States for accurate facial recognition. The country is now majority African, or people of African and European (mixed) descent. Their facial recognition has to be on-point when identifying people with African features of all kinds. If they can get it right, we’ll want to use the same tech to accurately identify Black and Brown people in the U.S. and beyond.

Finally, our palate cleanser features a cute pet story, of course.

And I give you a glimpse into my personal life by revealing one of my favorite hobbies and how I’m preparing for it right now.

Talk to you next week! - L
