Had lots of fun writing this week’s newsletter. I gather bits of news during the week as I comb through tons of data, news items, videos, interviews, and reports. If anything, DINT is the best of what I consume during the week.
Last night, though, Kamala Harris’s acceptance speech for the Democratic Party’s nomination as candidate for president definitely shot to the top of this week’s tech-related news items.
Seeing Harris shine and enthrall us gave me so much hope that this representation will bubble over to Black women in tech. It’s desperately needed as corporate environments in tech for Black women usually is a minefield that few get to navigate safely.
Am I wrong to hope for such results from the Democratic candidate’s performance during this presidential election cycle?
“Any port in the storm” as they say. But Harris isn’t just any port. Aside from skin color, I see a kinship in the way Harris leads, the way she speaks, the way she gets things done. I’ve seen this from Black women who dare to give their best in the tech world. And it’s intoxicating to see when we have a fair chance to achieve something great.
Yes, Harris has been hit with the ‘she’s hard to work with’ and ‘she’s not getting any results’ criticisms we all get in the tech industry as Black women. But those insults appear to be fuel rather than speed bumps for her.
Let’s see what the next few months hold. I’m watching for more of what we saw last night. I have a feeling it won’t be the last time I see something so familiar to me as my own story in tech.
BTW - Here are some images I prompted ChatGPT to create:
Prompt: Create an image of a leader in tech
Prompt: Create an image of a black female tech CEO
