Biometrics sweeping across Africa - for the better? DINT 120 Behind the Scenes

Some extras that aren’t in the newsletter:

Legislation to prevent AI systems from killing humans”

California SB 1047

The Wall Street Journal has a good summary of the push and pull between Big Tech and tech-wary state legislators. It’s odd that all Big Tech companies are based in the U.S. but the most stringent laws around data privacy and AI are in Europe, no?

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

“If it were to go into effect as written, it would have a chilling effect on innovation in California,” said Luther Lowe, the head of public policy at startup accelerator Y Combinator, which has played a leading role in lobbying efforts against the bill.

Meta Platforms and ChatGPT maker OpenAI have also raised concerns about SB 1047, while Google, Microsoft and Anthropic have proposed lengthy amendments.

It should be interesting to see where this goes, especially with the new director, Elizabeth Kelly, of the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (ASI) taking a here-and-now approach to how the group carries out its mission.

Kelly mentioned during her talk at Johns Hopkins University yesterday that her secret to keeping up with the laundry list of issues to address in the AI space would be to hire smart people.

I’ll keep watching and send updates as info comes my way! - L
